Cast yourVote for Billy and Jenny Barrett as King and Queen of the 2008 event.Billy and Jenny are one of three couples vying for the infamous Mardi Gras crown.
Billy and Jenny Barrett of Prince Frederick enjoy the competitive nature of the race for King and Queen as much as the opportunity to support a good cause. With their two boys, Rusty , age 16, and Scotty, age 12, the couple actively lead their sons’ “Heat” and “Lightning” soccer teams.
Billy is a local automotive specialist, and Jenny is Branch Manager for M&T Bank in Upper Marlboro, an added advantage because they see friends and neighbors on a daily basis. While they do have many, they are also relying on gaining support in their campaign for King and Queen, through special events such as soccer tournaments. “We want to use the competition and, hopefully, the title to bring awareness to the needs of the county and to highlight the things that the United Way does for those who live here.”

Cast yourVote for Mark and Wanda Davis as King and Queen of the 2008 event. Mark and Wanda are one of three couples vying for the infamous Mardi Gras crown.
Mark and Wanda Davis of Huntingtown are no strangers to giving to United Way. As a law partner in Davis, Upton and Palumbo, LLC, Mark established the firm’s first payroll deduction campaign in 2007. The couple has also taken their giving to new heights as a candidate couple, planning casino nights, silent auctions, and raffles- all in the race for King and Queen of Mardi Gras.
Meeting in high school, and marrying shortly after, the couple raised their children, Ashlie, age 21, and Keslie, age 16, in the safety net of Calvert County. They have given back to the community in many ways, Wanda volunteering for their church and Mark serving on Board of Directors for Calvert’s Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development committee, but this year’s fundraising efforts for United Way are an exciting change of pace.

Cast your Vote for Kim and Kelly McConkey as King and Queen of the 2008 event. Kim and Kelly are one of three couples vying for the infamous Mardi Gras crown.
Kelly and Kim McConkey of Owings want to engage the community around the idea of giving to United Way first and foremost. Kelly and Kim own and manage Kelly’s Nursery and Tree Service, while raising four boys, Kelly Jr., age 15, Kyle, age 11, Kory, age 7, and Kevin, age 3.
Despite the couple’s hectic schedule, they have held a car show, open house and silent auction, and are planning a dinner/dance for February. As the first couple to join the race for King and Queen of Mardi Gras and past supporters of the event, Kim and Kelly are looking forward to wearing the crown, which symbolizes for them a family tradition of “helping people in our community,” even when their schedule is tight and time is limited.
